Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF)
It is an effective alternative to surgery when treating GORD and it is a way of ensuring you have minimal recovery time, less pain and a much faster recovery than you could expect from traditional laparoscopic surgery.
Chronic GORD and Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is characterised by an extreme and unmanageable burning sensation in the centre of the chest, often after digesting food. Sufferers also experience stomach acid travelling back into the mouth and prior to TIF, this was treated through surgery, when diet and lifestyle changes and medication were not having an effect.
How does TIF work?
TIF is a highly advanced endoscopic procedure which involves the use of a special TIF device which incorporates different tools including preloaded tweezer, fasteners, and stitches. It requires no incision and allows the endoscopist to repair or rebuild the body’s natural barrier to reflux without the need for opening the neck and throat.
The TIF device uses stitches at the bottom of the oesophageal fold to tissue over the valve, this stops fluids and acid from the stomach escaping. Over time, the body will produce a new layer of tissue over the valve, strengthening it and making it even more effective.
TIF has become the preferred option for GORD treatment as it is minimally invasive and less stressful and risky for patients. It also allows patients to go home on the same day as the procedure in most instances, though a general anaesthetic is needed to carry it out.
Suffering from GORD can become intolerable and hard to live with, as patients cannot comfortably enjoy food or liquids without pain. For some patients dietary changes and medication are not a long-term solution, making the TIF procedure particularly useful and even necessary.
