BRAVO pH Testing

BRAVO pH testing

BRAVO pH testing is a minimally invasive investigative procedure often used to help patients with GORD. The procedure evaluations the levels of acidity in your oesophagus and can help diagnose the cause of your heartburn, reflux or swallowing problems.

When is BRAVO pH Testing used?

You could be offered BRAVO pH testing if you are suffering with problems relating to your oesophagus (food pipe) and connected organs. The test may be booked if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Heartburn
  • Acid reflux
  • Difficulty with swallowing
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Chest pain with no heart-related explanation

The BRAVO pH Testing Procedure

The BRAVO pH testing procedure is carried out via gastroscopy. It is usually carried out as an outpatient procedure and no anaesthetic is necessary. You can be offered sedation if you prefer and this can reduce discomfort and anxiety throughout the procedure.

The procedure begins with the endoscope being instead into your mouth and it is then passed down into your oesophagus. The camera on the endoscope provides an image of your oesophagus for the consultant and the BRAVO capsule can be passed down the endoscope and implanted into the wall lining of your oesophagus. It then transmits pH readings to a receive which you can wear round your waist on a belt.

The procedure is usually quick and pain free, lasting around half an hour. Some patients say they can feel the capsule but it isn’t painful and you should be able to get on with your normal day-to-day activities, including eating and drinking, straight away.

Test Results and Treatments

While the BRAVO capsule is in place you will be asked to provide a food diary along with evidence of any symptoms you experience. The receiver around your waist will record your pH data for 48 hours and then it needs to be returned to the clinic. The BRAVO device in your oesophagus naturally falls off and passes through your body within 12 days of the procedure.

Your consultant will analyse the results of the test and inform you of anything that needs following up. This treatment allows for a personally customised management plan of any symptoms and can help in deciding the next step to treat any conditions found arising from the test.
