Duodenal Mucosal Resurfacing (DMR)
What is Duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR)?
Duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR) is a procedure used to treat the lining of the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.
It is usually carried out as a day case and involves the ablation of the duodenal mucosa. It is an innovative treatment which removes the need for incisions, stitches or implants.
It is used to treat poorly controlled type 2 diabetes and is a very new and exciting treatment option for patients and doctors alike.

The DMR Procedure
THE DMR procedure involves inserting a flexible camera (endoscope) into the mouth and passing it down through the stomach, to the duodenum in the small intestine. This is a procedure that gastroenterologists are well experienced in and is endoscopy is used regularly for a range of different explorative and diagnostic purposes. In DRM, the endoscope is used to insert catheters through the mouth into the duodenum to treat issues with the lining. Heated balloons are attached to the end of the catheters and this thermal treatment modifies the cell lining of the duodenum. These cells are responsible for absorbing glucose and the body’s hormonal response to glucose control.
The procedure is designed to safely and effectively alter the inner surface of the duodenum to alter how your body processes the sugar from your diet. This process should in turn, improve blood sugar control, vital for type 2 diabetes patients.
